Wot me is thinking mate
My aunt and two cousins arrived from London, England on Tuesday and it's been a blast (blaaaaaah·st) having them around. I just love my two little cousins Vincent, aged 15 and Phillip, aged 11. Not only are their accents so fun to listen to, but they also have an impeccable vocabulary and are so well behaved - it must be some British kid thing. For instance, when Vincent was comparing Toronto to London he remarked, "It's-more-dangerous-in-London-I-reckon" (all British people speak super-fast). Even when he's yelling at his little brother it's all very polite and such... imagine the next sentence being read by Jamie Oliver: "Don't be-using-the-F-word-on-me-mate-or-I'll-be-throwing-it-back-on-you!" Phillip is the cutest; his favourite food is chips, he's obsessed with football and he addresses his brother by the nickname "V". So far the cutest thing he's said has been "Veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, wot-time-is-it-in-England?" He even uses a web-based MSN for kids called "Blintz" or something. It's definitely not rubbish, if you know what I'm saying.
Here are the following British pronounciations I've learned in the last few days:
Computer- com·poo·tah
Potato - po·tay·oh (the second "t" must not be pronounced!)
Hello - 'ello
Crap - cr·aaaaa·p
Popsicle - ice pole
Movies - cinema
My - me and Were - was ("Before me braces, my teeth was really bad.)
Poor Rose and I, we have no chance of ever being able to speak British. However, Rose is trying to compensate with her plethora of Ali G impressions with one of my favourites being:
"Why would anybody ever want to live in the rainforest? No Mackey D's, no KFC, no place to drive nowhere, got to worry about monkeys ploppin' on yer 'ead. Who would want to live there? You'd have to be absolutely mental."
It's definitely a full house here but it's been a lot of fun. I just wish I hadn't come down with the flu (I'll spare you the details, but it has involved a lot of fever-induced chills, night sweats, horking and coughing) and I really hope I get over it before the wedding, which is happening in two days! Wish me luck - I'm off to learn more British-speak...
