Pathologic polyphagia

There's something very wrong... I just keep on eating! There is only one thing on my mind (except for my patients, of course) and that is FOOD.

Aaaah.

Thank goodness everything comes in 100 calorie packages now. That's all I've been eating! Cadbury chocolate bars in a sleek and slender format = 100 calories. Mini Doritos with three sides, yes = 100 calories. Orville Redenbacher popcorn grab bags = 100 calories. Aaaaahhhhh.

Don't worry folks, I'm sure my bHCG levels are ZERO but I'm beginning to think that perhaps it is the kids on the ward that are making me hungry. They cry when they don't get to eat, they always ask for coke, diabetic patients on so-called "diabetic diets" get fried chicken and french fries and every kid calms down with a pacifier... argh!! I also have to stop eating my coworker's lunches when they offer me poutine!

I wonder if Babbo is to blame (like if it awakened my taste buds for the first time, or if it is truly like cocaine and I'm just trying to get my next fix with anything and everything). Or maybe it's the fact that I'm really, really enjoying my pediatrics rotation. Since Kingston is world-renowned for its "Hospital for Six Children" (we actually had seven in-patients at one point today!) us clerks actually get some responsibility. We have to know our patients in and out and we have to make management decisions. It's so much better than having a ginormous patient list and being asked to do all the scutwork. Instead of having time to barely finish a million history and physicals and progress notes, there is time to read and think about the best investigations and treatments for the patient. I did go into medical school thinking I wanted to be a pediatrician, but I dropped that idea for a few reasons (and not to mention Scutmonkey changed her mind too!) It's kind of too late now to seriously think about it as a career choice methinks. Seriously, what program would interview me with the majority of my electives in radiology on my CV? A crazy one. Or a nice one. Anyways I never thought I'd actually want to dissect the ins and outs of fluid management and actually want to calculate medication dosage based on weight. I also find myself wanting to read up on anything and everything related to kids when I get home! It's insane. This obsession with food and newfound inspiration is troubling me a bit. It's abnormal to be happy in medical school, isn't it?!?!?

So not surprisingly my days on the internet no longer involve Facebook but searching for the next new restaurant to go to. I'm loving table d'hote and prix fixe menus. I know what I'm going to spend and I know what I'm going to get. I'll be in Montreal over the Labour Day weekend and I think Mike and I are going to check out Queue de Cheval. I've also had my eye on this really innovative restaurant called O.Noir for awhile now, where you eat in the dark! I can only imagine how it would heighten your sense of taste. It's a great new concept that involves staff that are blind and visually impaired.

Oops and before I forget to mention, Mike and I recently checked out the Prince Edward County Taste Trail just an hour outside Kingston (imagine that - prime Canadian wine country in close proximity to K-town and I only found out a few weeks ago!) We had a ton of fun checking out several wineries and enjoying a beautiful weekend out in the vineyard. We fell in love with the Cabernet Franc at the Sandbanks Winery. I also had a to-die-for calamari salad at the Carmela Estates Winery for a snack. I bumped into so many residents at the wineries, it was too funny. I can't wait to return!
