Summer's almost over

It's past midnight, I'm on call tomorrow night and yet I am STILL not in bed! I've been suffering from very bad insomnia ever since summer decided to sink in. I can't sleep in the heat and it doesn't help that bugs like to fly in through my crappy window fan and bite me everywhere. I'm anemic, arthropods, leave me alone! It doesn't help that I get really bad reactions and I look like somebody attacked my face, arms and legs with a bright red bingo dabber. (Side note: Mike didn't know what a bingo dabber was, poor guy, what with his deprived Quebec upbringing sans TV Ontario.)

I've also gotten zero sun this summer with my new job as a hospital slave and all, so I kind of look like an emaciated, sometimes paradoxically overfed and withered corpse, even on my good days. Us clerks had the privilege of having a two-week vacation but I decided to participate in further self-inflicted pain and book an elective for this time period. I had fun, though, as I got to spend a WHOLE WEEK in my desired choice of career. It was great to spend time in interventional radiology. Even my resident friends in the hospital noticed that I had perked up. I also didn't mind looking at musculoskeletal imaging for the following week (MSK has never been my thing, considering the traumatic teaching experience we get here at Queen's on the subject in which we are forced to regress to Kindergarten). Now I know for sure what I want to do with my life... or do I?!??!? Now that I've started pediatrics I've really been enjoying it... but maybe that's 'cuz there's like three kids on the ward and I actually have time to breath and think of management plans and not just do scut work. Not to mention the kids are SO CUTE.

However, I did get some kind of reprieve (Mike's word), with a long weekend trip to NYC! Mike and I got this crazy deal from expedia.ca, with a two-night stay at Le Sofitel and a flight from Watertown, NY, which is about an hour's drive from K-town for a mere $400 each. However, you get what you pay for - we had to connect in Boston which is kind of silly and we didn't get our luggage on the way back because we barely made the connecting flight back. Anyways, that's what we get for flying out of a ghetto airport. At any rate, we had a fantastic time. We absolutely slept like babies in the glorious Sofitel beds, had New York pizza, delicious oyster and other seafood at the Grand Central Oyster Bar (and yes, I stay oysteR, no plural, because I ordered two which nobody does 'cuz Mike doesn't like them, but the waiter forced me to have him eat one, and in the end he liked it a lot). We also got to see the LION KING which was also fantastic and wonderful (we actually lost our tickets but it was okay in the end - long story, but moral is, DON'T LOSE YOUR THEATER TICKETS). I also finally ventured south of Chinatown and got to see the Statue of Liberty with my own two eyes. However, the absolute highlight of the trip was dining at BABBO which we had to reserve one month ahead. Italian food will never taste the same again. It was so frickin' wonderful, I died and went to heaven and like the first hit from cocaine (I hear) I will crave that meal forever more.

The Lion King!!

On our evening walk, Mike and I stumble by the building where we first met 2.5 years ago on new year's eve!

Good memories

Babbo!!

Molto delicioso!

Side note: On elective I discovered that Kingston is a mere drive away from Prince Edward County, which is like this up and coming wine region in Canada. I wish somebody had told me about this before! Next month a whole bunch of us are going to take a bicycle tour of all the wineries. I'm so excited!!!!
